Mary McCarthy Senior Strategist, Forum for the Future Americas Background: I work as a Sustainability Advisor in the US within Forum’s team focused on transforming the food system. I am passionate about creating shifts in the market that drive producers towards more sustainable methods. While studying Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan, I researched the impacts of anthropological inputs on biodiversity in the freshwater ecosystems of the Great Lakes. It was during this time that I became interested in reducing the heavy impact on our food system on our environment. I took my first step out of the lab and into the food world while researching rare and endangered food products for the non-profit Slow Food. I then transitioned to managing the operations at Heritage Foods USA, a sustainable meat company dedicated to increasing the biodiversity in the meat supply chain. Throughout my career, I have become increasingly aware of the complex, systemic challenges, which can be daunting for any one organization to face. I am excited to support Forum’s work to bring partners together to make dramatic moves towards a sustainable future. My dream project? Working on a global food project which balances the demand of providing proper nutrition for a growing global population, protecting our precious agricultural biodiversity, while protecting flavourful food. What floats my boat outside of work? I love playing rugby for New York Rugby Club, finding a new hiking trail outside of New York City or cooking new recipes with my CSA share.
