As a Bright Spot working with unique Indigenous-led approaches to capital allocation and entrepreneurship, Raven Indigenous Capital Partners launches a new era of inclusive venture capital.

Raven Indigenous Capital Partners is a groundbreaking venture capital firm dedicated to empowering Indigenous and Native entrepreneurs in Canada and the US. Founded in 2018, they address the chronic and historic underfunding of Indigenous businesses by providing access to culturally-appropriate capital and expertise.

Their first fund launched in 2019 exceeded its initial goal of $5 million, closing at $25 million, and has since made significant investments in Indigenous-led enterprises across the US and Canada. As an Indigenous-led and owned venture capital firm, Raven's approach is guided by an Indigenous worldview, focusing on both financial returns and social impact to support a reemerging Indigenous economy.

How is Raven Indigenous Capital Partners different from mainstream approaches?

Raven diverges from traditional venture capital by prioritising Indigenous cultural values and community empowerment. They use an Indigenous-focused impact framework to screen investments, ensuring that every dollar invested supports the wellbeing of Indigenous communities.

The businesses they support also reflect and embed Indigenous culture at their core; for example, companies such as Salish Soils and Animikii combine Indigenous knowledge systems with Western methods to address climate change and data sovereignty. Unlike conventional funds that often prioritise high returns over social outcomes, Raven uses equity- and equity-like investments in companies that strive to produce both impact and commercial returns.

Raven also builds trust by taking a patient and culturally sensitive approach to investing. They engage with Indigenous entrepreneurs where they are, fostering relationships that are centered on mutual respect and understanding. This approach alleviates tensions around traditional capital structures, which have historically marginalised their communities.

"Raven was the first venture capital fund in Canada to exclusively focus on investing in Indigenous-led startups. Raven is also unique in that we are a majority Indigenous-owned firm, meaning our investments in Canadian businesses is accretive to Indigenous ownership. "

Why does Raven Indigenous Capital Partners matter?

Raven’s approach to financing decolonises the process of access, prioritising Indigenous leadership and values to build economic reliance for Indigenous Peoples. Raven works collaboratively with Indigenous entrepreneurs, supporting them with financing, operational expertise, implementation of impact goals, and more.

By virtue of Raven’s existence as a by- and for-Indigenous venture fund, they aim to eliminate systemic barriers that have long excluded Indigenous entrepreneurs from mainstream financial systems and create new spaces, language and values where investors explore deep impact alongside economic returns. Raven helps these enterprises scale while addressing historical injustices, providing a pathway to healing through economic access.

What could the future look like if Raven Indigenous Capital Partners’ model scales?

If Raven’s approach becomes widespread, it could redefine the venture capital landscape by integrating Indigenous values into mainstream investing. This could lead to a more inclusive economy where Indigenous entrepreneurs have equal access to resources and opportunities, all while preserving Indigenous ownership of their capitalisation tables.

As more investors adopt impact-driven strategies, the focus on centering community needs, community histories and cultural knowledge as a portfolio could become a standard practice, fostering a more equitable distribution of wealth and even a reimagination of the kind of value venture capital is aiming to create. Scaling this model could inspire similar initiatives globally, addressing historical inequalities and promoting diversified economic growth.

Questions to consider:

  • How can Indigenous-led venture capital models, such as Raven Indigenous Capital Partners, reshape the broader financial landscape to prioritise cultural values and community empowerment alongside economic returns?
  • What potential global impact could arise if Raven’s model of inclusive and culturally sensitive investing becomes a standard practice in the venture capital industry?
