About a decade ago, in 2014, Forum for the Future set out in India with a clear goal: to create a future where both people and the planet thrive.

From the beginning, Forum believed that business could be a powerful force for good, and today, we’re doubling down on that belief. Progress has been encouraging, but it’s not yet delivering at scale. Businesses need to rethink how they operate and collaborate to strengthen their value chains and the broader systems they rely on. A focus on short-term profits often comes at the expense of long-term resilience; for businesses, society, and the environment. While efforts like greener products and improved ESG ratings are steps in the right direction, they often overlook the bigger picture and fail to drive meaningful change.

The change we need is clear: moving beyond incremental changes to embracing systems-level thinking, where sustainability is integral to business models, creating long-term value for all stakeholders.

This change has never been more urgent in the Indian context. India’s economy has grown significantly over the past decade, with GDP over $3.5 trillion and the country becoming the fifth-largest economy in the world. Rapid economic growth and technological progress have reshaped the business landscape. Digitisation, a booming startup ecosystem, favourbale policies, and renewable energy, now over 46% of the power mix, have created new opportunities. At the same time, rising heatwaves, floods, and cyclones have highlighted the need to build resilience. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed weaknesses in healthcare and supply chains, while growing calls for equality, workers' rights, and environmental responsibility have made it clear that business as usual is no longer enough.

The challenges we face today are only growing. Uncertainty is on the rise, and unsustainable ways of living and working have brought us to a pivotal moment — one that demands a reset.

Forum for the Future is about change: what it means, why it’s needed, and how to make it happen. We focus on food, energy, and the purpose of business, combining systems thinking, futures practice, and strategic collaborations to help businesses and industries reimagine how the world works, for a just and regenerative future.

Forum’s approach, grounded in systems and futures thinking, has helped businesses move from intention to action. Over the past decade, Forum has supported both internal transformation and wider systemic shifts by driving change across three key levels: hearts and minds, organisational action, and wider systems.

1. Changing hearts and minds

Forum’s work begins with shifting mindsets. Businesses and change-makers need to not only see the urgency for deep, systemic change but also feel inspired and capable of driving it.

Hansika Singh, Director of Systems Practice at Socratus Collective Wisdom Corporation, recalls how Forum’s work changed her own perspective:  "I first encountered Forum’s approach to systems thinking and long-term strategy as a student at NIFT, when I came across the Fashion Futures 2020 report. Even then, it was clear that Forum’s way of thinking was ahead of its time. When I saw a job opening for a Principal at Forum almost a decade later, I knew I had to apply. By then, many of the trends outlined in the report were already playing out in India, and it felt like Forum’s approach was more relevant than ever."

Hansika joined Forum in late 2019, and it immediately felt like the end of a long search for belonging.

“Forum’s approach, applying systems and futures thinking to real-world, complex, and messy problems, is something the world desperately needs but few organisations do well,” Hansika says. “The almost five years I spent at Forum revelatory, in terms of witnessing the power of these approaches into unlocking change that goes beyond surface level numbers and insights and works at a deeper paradigm-level shift.”

This mindset shift — from isolated action to systemic interdependence — is central to Forum’s theory of change. Forum helps change actors recognise their interconnectedness with wider society and nature, building the confidence and courage to act even in the face of uncertainty and resistance. Hansika highlights how this shift translates into action:

“Forum is great at playing a critical friend, pushing ambition among partners something that is both rare in this part of the world, and doesn't come naturally to organisations working in this space,” Hansika says. “This is something I learned to embody at Forum and now carry into new contexts and conversations.”

By helping businesses and leaders see the bigger picture, and their role in shaping it, Forum equips them not just to imagine change, but to lead it.

2. Unlocking organisational action

Shifting mindsets is only the beginning. Forum helps businesses turn awareness into action by aligning strategies, structures, and operations with just and regenerative (J&R) principles.

Forum has helped organisations integrate sustainability into their core business strategy, making it a key driver of growth and resilience building. Businesses are embedding sustainability into product development, supply chains, and business models, not just to meet targets, but to create long-term value and competitive advantage.

Take Royal Enfield, an iconic motorcycle brand with passionate global following, for example. Forum helped Royal Enfield look at a vision that is entirely aligned with the brand's core values. More importantly, Forum was able to work closely with the RE team to lay out a path and set goals that not only resonated internally but were actionable. This is crucial for a very hands-on, rooted brand. This has percolated down to its overall business strategy, with sustainability as one of its main pillars.

The work with Forum has also helped envision, create, and design RE's unique social mission— one that ambitiously goes beyond the limitations of conventional CSR around factories and areas of business focus to instead look at the vast Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). While the IHR is a place of global importance from an ecological, cultural, and climatological standpoint, it is also a spiritual home for Royal Enfield and its riding community. Royal Enfield is looking to work with 100 Himalayan communities and landscapes to enable them to become thriving and resilient in the face of climate change by 2030, and in the process, mobilise 1 million of its riders to be a part of this movement.

Bidisha Dey, Executive Director of Eicher Group Foundation, reflects on why the partnership worked: Royal Enfield's partnership with Forum was driven by their ability to foreground the brand's values in the sustainability roadmap. Their mission- led approach to developing and driving sustainability strategy resonated with us. It was also important that while bringing in their global understanding of sustainability and expertise, Forum was able to work with us in a collaborative manner and build capacity. At our end, Royal Enfield continues to engage with Forum, including applying its visionary Future's tool, while now putting the codevelped strategy and thought into action.

Forum also works with organisations to embed regenerative thinking into daily decision-making. This has supported regenerative agriculture and equitable value chains in the food sector and shaped corporate strategies with a deeper social and environmental focus.

Forum’s influence extends beyond strategy. It changes how leaders think about sustainability and systems change.

Nihar Priyadarshi, Lead at Samunnati — an open agri-network empowering smallholder farmers — reflects on how working with Forum has influenced his thinking:  "Though we’ve focused on sustainability in our projects, my engagement with Forum helped me think in other dimensions — like how to engage with policymakers, what to prioritise, and how to navigate the complexities of driving change. Forum’s approach has been incredibly insightful in helping us understand what to focus on and how to steer the journey toward meaningful outcomes."

Forum’s influence has also shaped how Samunnati operates:

"At Samunnati, we work to elevate smallholder farmers and agri enterprises by providing access to markets through financial intermediation, market linkages, and advisory services. This helps enterprises and value chains operate at a higher level, creating value for all stakeholders in the agri ecosystem. Forum’s guidance has helped us align these efforts with a broader sustainability strategy, making more informed decisions that drive long-term value."

Forum has also played a key role in strengthening ecosystems and fostering collaboration:

"This engagement has given us valuable insights into other ecosystem players working within the space. Together, we have the potential to create an even greater impact in the sustainability landscape."

3. Driving systemic change

Forum’s ultimate goal is to enable change at scale, influencing industries and markets beyond the organisations it directly works with. This means helping partners demonstrate systemic leadership by sharing their progress publicly and using their influence to bring others along.

Forum has played a key role in strengthening the transition ecosystem, creating new networks and building relationships between businesses, policymakers, and underrepresented voices. The Responsible Energy Initiative (REI) India is one such example. REI works with the renewable energy sector to understand the environmental and social impact throughout the value chain and collectively improve how these impacts are addressed. The goal is to promote norms and practices for the responsible growth of renewable energy, including on-the-ground innovation for ecologically positive and people-centric production and deployment of utility-scale RE, as well as the development of responsible policies, business models, and financing approaches

Bharath Jairaj, Executive Director, Energy Programme at WRI India, reflects on how this shift is taking shape:

" The change I see, and it’s a welcome one, is how governments at both the State and Central levels in India have started recognising these (environmental and social impact of renewable energy deployment) issues. Their focus may still be on more visible concerns, like waste management and circularity, but this is a promising shift given the enormous responsibility they have to meet ambitious targets"

" The private sector is also warming up to this new narrative, though there’s always a risk of greenwashing without proper regulation. That said, there are companies that have stepped up, incorporating REI’s principles into their operations. Overall, there’s a lot more confidence now that we can pursue renewable energy in a more responsible manner."

Forum’s approach with REI India reflects its broader strategy of enabling systemic change through deep collaboration. By working directly with key actors in the renewable energy sector, REI helps share insights, develop best practices, and drive action that leads to long-term transformation. This collaborative model empowers the sector to co-create a pathway to a responsible renewable energy system through individual, organisational, and sector-wide change.

"As organisations committed to India's clean energy future, we have been equally concerned about the environmental and social issues associated with large renewable energy projects. This has to change, and that's why we came together to establish REI India — seeking a transition to clean energy in a responsible manner," says Bharath. "The initial work on documenting the negative impacts was necessary to understand and share the true scale of these impacts. Previously, these issues were not explicitly recognised nor publicly acknowledged."

"The Call to Action report made it clear that the negative impacts must be avoided if India is to truly achieve a clean energy transition. Thankfully, REI India is no longer in the minority. Today, there is broader consensus on the need to address these issues — and reduce the footprint on land, water, and society from large renewable projects. It’s encouraging to see many organisations join REI India and embrace these challenges."

Looking ahead

As Forum reflects on a decade of impact, it’s not just looking back, it’s setting the stage for what’s next. The coming decade will demand deeper collaboration, more ambitious action, and a collective commitment to driving just and regenerative transitions at scale.

The opportunity to reshape industries and markets is within reach, and Forum remains committed to being a catalyst for this change. In a world where environmental and social challenges are growing more complex, Forum for the Future stands as a rare example of how systems thinking, long-term vision, and bold action can create real, lasting change.
